Helix Piercing Guide: Everything You Need to Know About and Around Piercings and Ear Piercings
Looking to add to your earring collection or start from scratch? A helix piercing is a great choice! But before you go to us for an ear piercing , it's worth learning all the important things – what it is, how painful it is, how long it heals, and how to care for it.
Feeling a little confused? You're not alone! While there's nothing wrong with having just the classic labret piercing (or none at all – do whatever you want!), having multiple piercings in one ear is more trendy than ever. Plus, there are so many different types of ear piercings – with names like "helix," "tragus," or "daith" that sound like something straight out of a Harry Potter book, it's easy to get confused.
That’s where we come in. Our client Mārīte, who is afraid of needles, overcame her fear and got two new helix piercings in her left ear. She shares her experience to help you feel prepared for your piercing appointment. If you’re looking to get a helix piercing (a smart choice!), read on to learn everything from what it is to the different versions and practical details.
What is a helix piercing?
A helix piercing is a piercing made in the upper cartilage of the ear. The classic helix is located on the outer, upper part of the ear, but there are also forward, backward, double and triple helixes.
What is a forward helix?
It is located at the front of the ear – just above the tragus, in the cartilage that forms the top of the ear. This is where the jewelry sits in the front of the ear. A double or triple front helix can also be created.
What is a double or triple helix piercing?
If you have two or three piercings in a row on the upper cartilage, it is called a double or triple helix. The name simply refers to the number of piercings in one ear.
Is a helix piercing painful?
Mārīte went to Nela Gems to get both a helix and front helix piercing. She shared her experience:
“When I was 18, I got my first helix piercing, but then I passed out outside the salon and had to throw away the cheap metal ring that caused a painful reaction.”
This time everything was different.
"Now, as I grow older, I choose a quality salon, where I get not only aesthetic experience, but also professional advice on care. The piercing itself was quick, and the pain was short-lived, more psychological than physical."
“The piercer started with the front helix – it was less painful, probably because the cartilage is thinner there. The helix was a little sharper, but very fast. Everything was done step by step, with explanations.”
“Considering my previous experience, they gave me a candy to restore my sugar levels after the piercing. This time I didn’t faint!”
Important tips about helix piercings
- If you are planning to get multiple piercings, do it in one ear at a time to avoid pain while sleeping.
- Before getting the piercing done, make sure you know the location of the point – the master will mark it with a pen, but you can ask to redraw it.
- A rod is inserted initially, not a ring, to ensure better healing. The ring can be inserted only after complete healing.
- The original piece of jewelry may have a longer bar , which can later be shortened – this process is called downsizing .
- Avoid getting your piercing wet – after a shower, dry it thoroughly with a towel or a hair dryer on cool setting.
How long does a helix piercing last?
Unlike a labret, which heals within a month, a helix piercing takes 3-6 months to heal . Healing is different for everyone. Expect some soreness, redness, swelling, or even bleeding for the first few days.
How to care for a helix piercing?
- Use saline solution and gauze pads to gently clean the piercing.
- Avoid cotton swabs – the fibers can get stuck in the wound.
- Don't start moving the jewelry around - it interferes with healing. Gently move the jewelry back and forth while cleaning.
- Only replace your jewelry when you are absolutely sure that everything has healed completely.
⚠️ What to do if the piercing doesn't heal?
Redness, swelling, and bumps are common symptoms – these can be treated at home or with the help of a specialist.
If the piercing is sensitive, takes too long to heal, or shows signs of infection, contact a professional piercer immediately.
To facilitate healing, you can use Fucidin or Bepanthen ointment. Salt water compresses are good for reducing redness.
A helix piercing is not just an element of beauty – it is a small step towards your expression and style. ✨ If you do it with thoughtfulness and proper care, it will bring both joy and elegance every day. 💕
